Records fall at this international meeting of North American greats
Open Caledonian Heavy Events Competition Saturday, September 1st, 2007
Craig Smith set a first time Caledonian Heavy Event field record with the (28.9 lb) heavy standing stone put (as thrown at Braemar) of 34 ft 0 in.
Kerry Overfelt set two new Wisconsin Highland Games Caledonian Heavy Event field records by out-throwing three-time World Highland Games Champion Ryan Vierra’s heavy weight for distance field record of 43 ft 10 in, set in 2004, with a throw of 44 ft 6.5 in. He improved his own light Scottish hammer field record from 2005 of 124 ft 2 in with a throw of 126 ft 8 in. K.O. achieved this feat the hard way, with a 16 lb Celtic hammer with the hammer handle cut to 48 inches, for use in the Hibernian heavy events. Although still legal for Caledonian Heavy event competition use, it was 2 inches shorter then the 50-inch Scottish hammer handle length allowed for the Caledonian Heavy Events.
Kerry is the second athlete (out of 30 of North America’s top heavy athletes) in three years to turn the mean old Wisconsin Championship Caber, aka the Badger Stick, at the Wisconsin Highland Games, with a score of 11 o'clock, matching Lucas McKay’s championship turn in 2005.
Open Hibernian Heavy Events Competition Sunday, September 2nd, 2007
Canada’s Olympic discus hopeful and Canadian 22 lb Caledonian standing stone record-holder Darius Slowik set two new Hibernian Heavy Event North American records by besting fellow Canadian Tim Ryan’s (Irish Whale Pat Ryan’s brother) 7 lb weight over the shoulder hurl record of 79 ft 11 in, set in Nenagh NY, July 17th, 1895, and taking fellow Olympian J. S. Mitchell’s 16 lb Celtic hammer, from the 9-foot circle, without follow, record of 133 ft, set in Newark, NJ, Oct. 20th, 1888. Slowik sent the 7 lb winding weight 86 ft 9 in, and the 16 lb Celtic hammer from the 9-foot circle 133 ft 4.5 in, setting the US and Canadian records in both events. Darius also set the following field and Canadian records in the Hibernian heavy events: 16 lb light shot put from the 7-foot box, 47 ft 0 in, and 28 lb light pushing weight from the shoulder, with follow, 34 ft 4 in.
Slowik will be credited with holding the Canadian records in the following Hibernian heavy events, until further research proves otherwise: Pushing 56 lbs, with follow, 19 ft 4 in, throwing 56 lbs, one hand, unlimited run and follow, 26 ft 0 in, and 56 lb weight sling, without follow, 23 ft 3.25 in, Waukesha WI, Sept. 2nd 2007.
Kerry Overfelt set two new world records in the Hibernian Heavy Events, by throwing 56 lbs, one hand, unlimited run and follow, 39 ft 0 in, besting the world's great all-arounder T. F. Kiely’s world record throw of 38 ft 11 in, and crushing legendary Irish Whale Con Walsh’s 16 ft 2 in world record toss, in the 56 lb weight toss for height (hitting the 2-foot wooden disc) event, with a mighty toss of the half-hundred weight, that lightly struck the bottom of the 2-foot wooden disk suspended 19 feet overhead.
Craig Smith set a field record in the 56 lb heavy pushing weight, from the shoulder, without approach, with follow though, with a push of 19 ft 8.5 in. Smith is now the third athlete to turn the Wisconsin Highland Games Championship Caber. Craig achieved this feat while injured, using a very short choppy run and a mighty pull, scoring the third 11:00 o’clock turn, during the Challenge Caber event held after the Hibernian Heavy Events on Sunday.
